Mixing It Up For Better Fitness

As a triathlete, it is important for me to vary my workout routine by swimming, biking, running and strength training, and to vary the distances and intensity as my race schedule changes.

I noticed that many fitness participants do not vary their workouts from one day to the next. I also hear these same people complain that they are not losing weight or they are not seeing improvement. One reason they are not seeing positive changes is they have gotten into a predictable routine, and their body has adapted to this routine.

The human body is extremely adaptable, which is a good thing most of the time. However, when it comes to working out, we need to trick our bodies by varying the workout routine. This new routine will require new energy, new muscle groups and new strength, which will help improve fitness levels and burn more calories, and burn more fat.

Varying a workout or activity will add variety and will break up the routine, which decreases the chance of burnout. It can reduce the chance of injury by giving certain muscles and joints a rest. Certain activities will strengthen related muscle groups that will build overall strength and durability.

Here are a few suggestions how to vary your workout, or cross train:

  • Vary the distances and speed of your workouts. For a walker or a runner who does three workouts per week; do one longer workout, one faster, shorter workout and one in between. Or put in a hill workout to change the routine.
  • Cross train by doing a different activity or sport. This will break up the normal routine while giving your body a new challenge. Swimming and cycling are good alternatives to weight bearing activities, such as running and walking. Water walking or deep-water running are a great alternative for tired legs.
  • Add variety by exercising all muscle groups. No single exercise or activity can provide total body fitness. It is important to include some type of aerobic component, strength component and flexibility component.

It is very easy to fall into the same exercise routine day in and day out. Take time to seek out alternatives to enhance your fitness level. Your body and mind with thank you.
