December Good Health Tips
Now that we are in the thick of the holiday season, it is even more important to maintain a schedule of regular physical activity. Work, family and social obligations can easily create stress and put a damper on the joy of the season. Use exercise time as your personal time to refresh your body and mind. Exercise is a proven stress reducer and you will feel better about yourself for having stuck to your regimen. Even on your busiest days, try to fit in a small amount of physical activity. Just keep moving!
Extra activity tips:
- Park further away from the stores when you go shopping.
- Make sure you are in a safe, well-lit area if you are shopping at night.
- Take the dog for a walk. Pets can be forgotten during the hub-bub of the season. A walk will do you both good.
- Make family time active time. Have a family football game or take a walk together.
- Go caroling or take a stroll around the neighborhood to see the holiday lights.
Holiday eating can not only derail a healthy diet but it can leave you feeling sluggish as well. Whereas a balanced diet makes you feel energized, one that is high in fat has the opposite effect. You can still enjoy your holiday favorites but follow these tips:
- Keep track of the healthy foods you need to eat daily, such as a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Make sure you eat the good stuff first.
- Eat a small healthy meal before going to a party.
- Eat sample size portions instead of regular serving size portions of foods that are higher in fat and calories.
- Beware of liquid calories and drink conservatively.
- Drink plenty of water to stay properly hydrated.
- Regulate your sleep pattern. This will help your body and your mind.
